An artist and printmaker with a keen eye for graphic invention, Julian Trevelyan was a major unsung figure behind the British etching revolution of the s. A Surrealist in his youth, the magic of dreams and the subconscious never truly left his work.

This is Julian Trevelyan at his best. There is imposition of clear pattern and design in this portrayal: collage-like clouds; the geometric shapes of triangular sails and a round buoy. The buoy itself looks as if fallen from the skies and is reminiscent of the way the sun sinks at dusk amongst the waves. There .   Julian Trevelyan: Picture Language – Philip Trevelyan’s new book on his artist father, and my Book of the Week – opens with an insightful Foreword by art critic Mel Gooding, who commends the book for bringing out as never before ‘the double-sided aspects of Trevelyan’s artistic impulses’.. The Trevelyan family was well-connected and highly civilised. Julian’s father was a classical scholar, poet and essayist, and to his house near Leith Hill in Surrey came a wide range of guests. Julian Trevelyan had no formal art training but joined Stanley Hayter's atelier in Paris in where he worked alongside artists such as Ernst, Kokoschka, Masson, Miro and Picasso.
